Knit Unto Others.....
Knit Unto Others is proud to be involved in our community. Hundreds of opportunities exist for you to knit, crochet, or cross stitch garments or blankets for those in need of warm clothes or a warm hug. Knit Unto Others will provide information for free patterns for many charitable causes, such as Knitting for Noggins, Project Linus, Warm Up America, and Prayer Shawl Ministry. Just drop in and ask Claire about not only sharing your talent but your compassion and love by knitting for others who are less fortunate.
Knitting for Noggins Last year Arkansas Children’s Hospital began a program called Knitting for Noggins€ which provided warm winter hats to children in the hospital and those who come to the hospital for treatment. They received more than 27,000 hats from around the country and two foreign countries as well.
Project Linus Project Linus is comprised of hundreds of local chapters and thousands of volunteers across the United States. Each volunteer and local chapter all work together to help us achieve our mission statement, which states:
First, it is our mission to provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need, through the gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans lovingly created by volunteer ‘blanketeers’.
Second, it is our mission to provide a rewarding and fun service opportunity for interested individuals and groups in local communities, for the benefit of children.
Together we have distributed over three million blankets to children in need since our inception in 1995.
Warm Up America! Warm Up America! (WUA!) is an organization made up of volunteers who create handmade afghan blankets, clothing and accessories to help those in need. These items provide warmth and comfort to people who have lost their homes, fled abusive relations, or are being cared for in hospices, shelters, hospitals, and nursing home.
Prayer Shawl Ministry Compassion and the love of knitting/crocheting have been combined into a prayerful ministry and spiritual practice which reaches out to those in need of comfort and solace, as well as celebration and joy.
Whether they are called Prayer Shawls, Comfort Shawls, Peace Shawls, or Mantles, etc., the shawl maker begins with prayers and blessings for the recipient. The intentions are continued throughout the creation of the shawl. Upon completion, a final blessing is offered before the shawl is sent on its way. Some recipients have continued the kindness by making a shawl and passing it onto someone in need.
Shawls can be used for: undergoing medical procedures; as a comfort after a loss or in times of stress; during bereavement; prayer or meditation; commitment or marriage ceremonies; birthing, nursing a baby; bridal shower or wedding gift; leading ritual; first menses or croning rites of passage; during an illness and recovery; ministering to others; graduation, birthday, anniversary, ordination, holiday gifts; or just socializing....there are endless possibilities!
